  • Kolkata: The West Bengal Pradesh Congress, in response to the mass chanting of religious texts, will organize a mass recital of the Indian Constitution on Dec 20. Protecting the secular tenets of the statute was the need of the hour, the party stressed.

"The Constitution is our armour. That is why we have chosen to recite the Indian Constitution on Dec 20, where people from every religion and every sect will remain present. Thousands will gather on Rani Rashmoni Road to recite it. While chanting ‘Gita' or ‘Quran' is acceptable to all, the Indian Constitution binds us with a secular thread. The same Constitution has given us the right to chant religious texts like ‘Gita' or ‘Quran'," said Subhankar Sarkar, the Bengal Congress chief.

"India has embraced both ‘Vande Mataram' and ‘Jana Gana Mana'. We have also seen how a man was manhandled near the ‘Gita' chanting venue. We have to stand against divisive politics and unite people against religious divisions. India can never forget that every religious practice gets protection from this Constitution," Sarkar said.

Bengal Congress will also celebrate its foundation day on Dec 28 and take out a rally from the party's state headquarters at Vidhan Bhavan to Shyambazar.
