  • Kolkata: If you are commuting from either Behala, Maheshtala, Joka and beyond towards the city centre, get ready to relive the pain of commuting as suffered when the old Majerhat Bridge collapsed. The Taratala Bridge will be shut from Saturday afternoon to Tuesday night for conducting a load test on three spans.

During the closure period, commuters have been advised by Kolkata Police to plan their routes carefully to avoid congestion and delays. Northbound vehicles are encouraged to use the Karunamoyee Bridge or Biren Roy Road while southbound traffic can opt for Durgapur Bridge, Hide Road, Nalini Ranjan Avenue, or Karunamoyee Bridge.

"This period of closure is a reminder of the importance of infrastructure maintenance and the need for public cooperation to minimise inconvenience. Commuters are urged to stay informed about the closure and plan their journeys accordingly," the Kolkata Police stated.

Cops will allow peak-hour traffic more leeway by holding up cross traffic. Some traffic will be diverted from Sahapur Road towards James Long Sarani to cut movement at the Taratala crossing. "We will depute extra men in adequate numbers," said an officer.
