Kolkata: While the inquiry committee visited the Salt Lake stadium to probe the incident and fix responsibilities, Bidhannagar Police said lists are being prepared of suspects who will eventually be sent summons. The inquiry committee, headed by retired Justice Asim Kumar Roy, was at the spot for nearly three hours on Sunday. However, they refused to comment on possible reasons leading to the ruckus and its aftermath.
CM Mamata Banerjee announced on Saturday the formation of the committee to conduct a detailed enquiry, fix responsibilities, and recommend measures to prevent such occurrences in the future. On Sunday morning, retired Justice Roy, accompanied by chief secretary Manoj Panth and home secretary Nandini Chakraborty, reached the spot. They took the route which Messi took on Saturday while entering the stadium.
"The investigation has started, and we prepared a roadmap on Saturday night. We visited the spot, and videography was done. We took detailed notes of what we witnessed. We are at a very primary stage and unable to comment on what led to the incident. The report will have our findings in detail," Justice Roy said.
Meanwhile, Bidhannagar Police started going through CCTV footage to identify people responsible for the incident. "Two cases have been registered, and we are going through the CCTV footage. Lists have been prepared, and summons have been sent. Those who are identified will be arrested," said Bidhannagar commissioner Mukesh, who was also present at the spot. However, he did not specify the number of people who were sent summons.
While vendors and spectators claimed there were nearly 300 people on the ground, and officials and celebrities obscured the Argentina and Inter Miami forward, police also started looking into passes issued to people. "There were multiple back-to-back events, and passes were issued accordingly. Many people were present at the venue. Programmes were lined up, but they couldn't take place because of the mismanagement," Mukesh said.
Questions are also being raised about hundreds of water bottles, forbidden inside the stadium, being found on the pitch. Spectators claimed each of these bottles was sold for Rs 200. "We are looking into the list of vendors and people responsible for that," Mukesh said.
Retired Justice Roy said that the committee will also suggest ways to stop any such event in the future. "The terms of reference for the committee also include recommendations regarding measures to be taken in the future," he said.
