  • Kolkata: A third arrest was made on Sunday in the probe into the Basanti Highway crash involving Bholanath Ghosh, a key witness in ED and CBI cases against Sandeshkhali strongman Sheikh Shahjahan. Ghosh has alleged the Dec 10 crash was not accidental but the result of a conspiracy.

The arrested man was identified as Golam Hossain Molla. Police said Molla was the "permanent helper" attached to the truck that crashed into Ghosh's car, but it was not clear yet if Molla was inside the vehicle at the time of the incident.

Cops were tracking his phone and he was picked up from Khorampur under Hasnabad police station. Molla's mother has denied her son's involvement, saying, "He did not go with the truck."

Molla was produced before a subdivisional court in Basirhat which remanded him to eight days' police custody.

Police had made two arrests in the case on Saturday, those of Uttam Sardar alias Sushanta, a Trinamool zilla parishad member and Ruhul Quddus Sheikh. Sardar had also been arrested last year in connection with an alleged attack on an ED team at Shahjahan's residence.
