  • Kolkata: Body cameras have been made mandatory for all levels of police personnel, from traffic police inspectors to civic volunteers, on several important roads of Howrah.

This pilot project, initiated by Howrah City Police, started in the Kona Expressway, Howrah Bridge, and Howrah Station areas from midnight on Sunday. DC (Traffic) Sujata Kumari Vinapani stated that the footage from these body cameras will record all details related to traffic control, protests, traffic rule violations, and public interactions, which will be stored in the Howrah City Police control room for future investigations and traffic system planning. Howrah City Police has already procured 3,000 body cameras, with 750 being used initially from Sunday midnight.

Before starting duty, the camera must be attached to the front of the uniform and turned on, and after duty, it must be turned off and submitted to the traffic guard with mandatory registration in a logbook, said a cop.
