Kolkata Metro latest update: Kolkata Metro is set to introduce two new direct train services between Jai Hind Bimanbandar and Shahid Khudiram stations from December 15. The initiative is expected to benefit passengers commuting to and from DumDum airport, as well as those travelling to other parts of the city. For now, the services will be operated on an experimental basis.
In a statement, the Kolkata Metro authorities said: “For the benefit of the air travellers arriving at DumDum airport in the morning or late evening as well as other commuters, Metro Railway is introducing direct services from 15.12.2025 (Monday) on an experimental basis from Jai Hind Bimanbandar station to Shahid Khudiram station.”
The Jai Hind Bimanbandar to Shahid Khudiram direct metro train service will run via Noapara on weekdays. “Two direct Metro services ( one in the morning peak hours and another in the late evening) will operate on this route from Monday to Friday from Jai Hind Bimanbandar to Shahid Khudiram stations,” it added.
The first train will leave from Jai Hind Bimanbandar at 09:36 am, and the second one will leave at 21:00 hrs. The passengers availing these two services from Jai Hind Bimanbandar station and can travel to places like Esplanade, Kalighat, Mahanayak Uttam Kumar or Shahid Khudiram won’t have to change trains at Noapara station.
“These experimental services will ensure a seamless and convenient journey from the Airport to Shahid Khudiram or other places in and around Kolkata,” it said.
The Jai Hind Bimanbandar–Shahid Khudiram route will have a total of 24 metro stations. These are: Kazi Nazrul, Gitanjali, Masterda Suryasen, Netaji, Mahanayak, Rabindra Sarobar, Kalighat, Jatin Das Park, Netaji Bhavan, Rabindra sadan, Maidan, Park Street, Esplanade, Chandni Chowk, Central, MG Road, Girish Park, Sovabazar-Sutanuti, Shyambazar, Belgachia, DumDum, Noapara, DumDum Cantonment and Jessore Road stations.
The Kolkata Metro is the country’s first metro rail project, with construction started in 1973–74. Prime Minister Narendra Narendra Modi inaugurated the Noapara-Jai Hind (airport) section of the Kolkata Metro’s Yellow Line this year in August alongside the Sealdah-Esplanade section of the Green Line, and Hemanta Mukhopadhyay (Ruby Crossing)-Beleghata section of the Orange Line.
