Kolkata: The SIR led to the deletion of 44,787 electors from the Bhowanipore constituency. With 2,06,295 electors in chief minister Mamata Banerjee's constituency before the revision, one in five names, 21.7%, were deleted in the current exercise.
The list indicates that at Mitra Institution Booth No. 260, under the CM's own polling station, 127 names were excluded, of which 13 individuals died. The majority of the omitted electors were either untraceable or permanently relocated.
Seven BLOs were present from 10 am on Tuesday. At Mitra Institution, it was mostly an uneventful day with hardly 50 people coming to check their names; all their names were on the list. A BLO, Sharmishtha Banerjee, said, "Everyone who submitted their forms had their names on the list. There was hardly any error."
The BLOs are expecting an increase in the number of queries on the weekends. "It was a weekday and we sat during office hours, which is 10 am to 4 pm. So, it's likely that more queries will pour in on weekends. But apart from that, the majority of people checked their names online and we have hardly received complaints of information mismatch or that someone's name was dropped out of the list. Everyone who submitted their forms was on our list," Banerjee said.
From the very onset of the SIR process, political parties focused on key assembly seats, including Bhowanipore, and the potential impact of the revision on each party. After the SIR exercise concluded, the EC published the figures for Bhowanipore, the CM's constituency, which revealed the unusually high number of exclusions. Mamata Banerjee won the last assembly poll from Bhowanipore, but Trinamool trailed in five out of the eight wards.
Of the 2.1 lakh electors' names deleted from Bhowanipore, 10,897 electors died, 19,471 could not be traced, and 12,547 permanently shifted to a new address. There are also 1,097 duplicate voters on the deletion list.
The number of names that could get struck off the final list could potentially rise further with 12% or 24,737 electors yet to be mapped, said a BLO. While their names currently figure on the list, they may be called for a hearing to provide documents to prove their identity.
Bhowanipore assembly constituency, however, does not have the highest number of name deletions in Kolkata South. In Kolkata Port, represented by minister and mayor Firhad Hakim, more than one in four names were deleted in SIR 2025. The number of unmapped electors is 29,248, who may face further scrutiny.
