  • Kolkata: Bengal equally loved all its festivals, cultural events and games, said chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday, reiterating the state's commitment to religious harmony. The CM was speaking at the inauguration of Kolkata Christmas Festival at Allen Park on Park Street.

"People defame us but in Bengal, we love all religions. We celebrate all festivals as our own because the people of Bengal love everything, from ‘mela' to ‘khela'. These events serve as a bridge between the common man and celebrations, connecting Bengal with the world and creating a joyful atmosphere for those celebrating Christmas and the New Year," said Banerjee.

Pointing out that Bengal was home to many tourism destinations, she said, "We have forests, seas and mountains. But what we especially have is humanity, love and friendship that we offer to everyone." The chief minister said festivals, such as Christmas, also acted as a catalyst to attract tourists. "We are currently ranked second in the country in tourism. Many foreign tourists are visiting the state and we hope to become No. 1 in near future. From the sea to the forests to the Himalayas, Bengal has everything. More than anything else, the state is known for its humanity, love for people and warm hospitality," said Banerjee.

The CM said festivals provided for the perfect occasion to bond with one another, enjoy good food and reduce stress. "Why live only with tension? There should also be some relaxation," said Banerjee. "I thank the 14 churches across the state, including those in Darjeeling, for celebrating Christmas so beautifully. We believe people should always remain happy. In today's stressful lives, festivals provide relaxation, promote cultural activities, create opportunities for people to meet each other and enjoy good food together."

The Kolkata Christmas Festival will continue till Dec 30. "The 15th Kolkata Christmas Festival began today (Thursday) at Allen Park, Park Street and nearby areas. The festival will continue till Dec 30, decorations and food stalls will stay till Jan 5. Vehicular movement will be restricted on Dec 24 and 25 but pedestrians will be allowed, as thousands of people are expected to visit the area," said Banerjee.
