  • Kolkata: JSW Energy will acquire GE's supercritical thermal boiler manufacturing facility in Durgapur, the only such facility in eastern region and the third facility in India.

JSW Energy joint MD and CEO Sharad Mahendra told TOI that it has already signed an agreement with GE to purchase the Durgapur unit, but it would take some more time to complete the transaction.

Mahendra said the US engineering giant was exiting the thermal boiler business globally, and selling the Durgapur unit is part of its global strategy. According to him, the two other such units in the country belong to BHEL and Mitsubishi, respectively.

The Durgapur plant has a capacity to manufacture 1-2 boilers per year or 1,600 (800 MWx2). But it is currently running at 15% capacity and only making spare parts for boilers for existing clients.

Employment at the plant would go up from 200 now to 600, he added. The company said it would invest in another 1,600 MW supercritical power plant in Salboni, taking the total capacity to 3,200 MW.

The group's total power investment will go up to Rs 40,000 crore, while incremental investment would be Rs 24,000 crore (with Rs 16,000 crore announced earlier).
