Kolkata: Cops busted a fake call centre at Bikramgarh under Golf Green Police Station, and arrested four persons — Jamshed Ansari, Md Soyeb Ansari, Birendra Pandit, and Pradeep Mandal on Thursday. All four are residents of Jharkhand. Twenty-four cellphones, one laptop, one router, and 250 Mule PAN cards were seized from them.
Based on a tip-off, cops raided the call centre and questioned the four about its operations. Cops arrested them as they could not give a satisfactory reply.
The accused reportedly used to cheat people on the pretext of assistance in dealing with traffic challans, as well as hospital and hotel bookings, according to police. The accused would call people, posing as representatives of hospitals or officials of the transport department, and then sent files to victims on WhatsApp. These files, once downloaded, allowed the accused access to the targets' mobile phones and UPI accounts.
