  • Kolkata: Last-minute shopping for musical Santas and Christmas trees on Sunday increased footfall across markets and shopping malls in the city, with only three days left for Christmas. Sunday was the last weekend before Christmas.

Christmas trees, decorative goodies, Santa-themed clothing and memorabilia, and baked items are some of the favourites that shoppers in Kolkata are going into a frenzy over to get hold of and celebrate the festivities.

Apart from the crowded markets, various parts of the city have been lit up, and shops with Christmas-themed decorations are ushering in the festive vibes.

Throughout the years, traditional local bakeries have always been the spot for people to get hold of cakes and symbolically celebrate the festival with their loved ones. Baked goodies like plum cakes, fruit cakes, and Dundee cakes have been flying off the shelves, with numerous people crowding across shops to buy the baked goodies.

The iconic bakery, Nahoum's, located in New Market and famous for its rich cakes, had hundreds of customers.

A bakery representative said, "The footfall has been good for the last two weeks." With Metro connectivity having increased access to New Market, the footfall only seems to have increased for Christmas.

Various shops have been set up across Park Street, and several other markets are seeing number of people buying Christmas-themed memorabilia and items. A shopkeeper at New Market said, "Many are visiting the markets, but the sales don't seem to be satisfactory. There are queries about costs but the sale numbers do not seem to reflect the enthusiasm."

At Hatibagan, 15 shops have been set up to sell Christmas decorations from the first week of Dec. While the shopkeepers claimed there was a slump in sales despite heavy footfall, they added that people's tastes have evolved from traditional Santa figurine or Christmas tree to fancy ones, like a parachute-wielding Santa Claus.
