The city is bracing for a busy Sunday with the Tata Steel World 25K Kolkata 2025 marathon, a World Athletics Gold Label Road Race, which will kick off from Indira Gandhi Road. Elite runners from India and around the globe will hit the road for the event.
The event will feature top athletes including Uganda’s two-time Olympic champion and three-time world champion Joshua Cheptegei and Tanzania’s Alphonce Felix Simbu, the reigning world marathon champion after his gold-medal performance at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo earlier this year.
In the women’s race, defending champion Sutume Asefa Kebede will be aiming to complete a hat-trick.
Indian athletes led by multiple national record-holder Gulveer Singh and defending champion Sanjivani Jadhav in the men’s and women’s races, respectively. Gulveer, who holds the national records in the men’s 3,000m, 5,000m and 10,000m events, returns to Kolkata after setting a new Indian meet record of 1:14:10 last year.
In the men’s field is the 25K Kolkata 2022 champion Abhishek Pal, who recently won a gold medal at the TCS World 10K Bengaluru 2025.
In the women’s race, Sanjivani will face Seema, winner of the 2025 Delhi Half Marathon and a South Asian Championships silver medalist, and Thakor Nirmaben Bharatjee, the 2025 Mumbai Marathon champion.
While the event will be live-streamed and telecast in India, road closures are also in place for the marathon, affecting areas like Red Road, Mayo Road, Park Street, and AJC Bose Road and people are advised to plan their commute accordingly.

Women’s organisation of CPIM will hold a rally at Dharmatala
The women’s organisation, around 1.30 pm, of CPIM, All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) will hold a rally at Dharmatala (Esplanade) on the inauguration of the state conference. Traffic diversions will be in place in central Kolkata.
