Kolkata: A Ranaghat court on Monday convicted nine people in connection with the gang rape of a teenager at Hanskhali, who later died from her injuries. The CBI, which took over the case in April 2022, filed the chargesheet in July that year.
The Ranaghat court, pronouncing the nine guilty, stated the quantum of the sentence would be announced on Tuesday. The minor was gang-raped by the son of a Trinamool panchayat leader, Brajagopal Goali, and his friends, Prabhakar Poddar and Ranjit Mallick, on her birthday. She was first intoxicated, and then three of the accused gang-raped her. It was further alleged the victim's family was threatened by three other accused in conspiracy with the prime accused, preventing them from taking her to the hospital.
She died the following morning. It was also alleged that the accused immediately took the victim's body and cremated it without allowing a medical examination.
