Kolkata: Abdul Alim Molla, the driver of the killer truck involved in the Basanti Highway crash on Dec 10, which targeted a key CBI and ED witness, was arrested on Monday, taking the total number of arrests in the case to five. The crash was an attempt to kill Bholanath Ghosh, a witness in the land-grab cases against former Sandeshkhali strongman Sheikh Shahjahan. Ghosh narrowly escaped death, but his younger son Satyajit and car driver Shahnur Alam were killed.
Police said Alim, who allegedly drove the 16-wheeler that rammed Ghosh's car, was arrested from a hideout in Minakhan in Basirhat subdivision. He was produced in Basirhat Sub-Divisional Court on Monday and remanded in police custody for nine days.
Police suspect Alim was paid over Rs 1 lakh as "supari" to carry out the murder by staging the crash. Investigators are probing the alleged monetary trail and the wider conspiracy behind the attack.
