  • Kolkata: With repair work already underway on Sodepur flyover, causing severe inconvenience to commuters, fresh trouble is looming as the Belgharia flyover — connecting the Belgharia Expressway to Dum Dum airport — is set to be closed for urgent repairs.

On Tuesday, a team of senior administrative officials, including PWD executive engineers, senior officers from Barrackpore Commissionerate, and the chairman of Kamarhati Municipality, carried out an inspection of structural health condition of Belgharia flyover. They decided to shut the traffic on the flyover to carry out urgent repairs.

The flyover is a crucial link between BT Road, the airport-bound Belgharia Expressway, the Kalyani Expressway, and Jessore Road. It is heavily used by large goods vehicles, office-goers, students, and daily commuters from both sides. Following a structural health audit, engineers found the condition of the girders above the rail tracks to be extremely poor.
