  • Kolkata: Kolkata Police on Tuesday registered a suo motu FIR against the BLOs protesting outside the Bengal election commission's.

DC (Central) Indira Mukherjee confirmed the development and said that the sections included assaulting or using criminal force against public servants to deter them from their duty and causing mischief. "The case was recorded on our behalf based on Monday's protest. We are investigating the case. As of now, none has been identified as an accused," said Mukherjee.

On Monday, and again on Tuesday, a section of BLOs took part in demonstrations in front of the CEO's office. They complained of harassment due to frequent rule changes. Despite the commission's prohibition, a section of BLOs stayed put.

On Monday, during the protest, in their attempt to push past barricades, there was a scuffle with the police. Slogans were raised. The protest lasted for over an hour. The BLOs claimed that even though they completed their work by Dec 11, they are now being overburdened with additional responsibilities.

The BLOs further argued that due to the SIR work pressure, they were unable to teach students. They waned to meet the state's chief electoral officer. However, this is not the first time; during the main phase of the SIR, BLOs repeatedly protested in front of the CEO's office. The movement also included concerns about the health of BLOs. Reports of BLOs dying under work pressure led to tensions both administratively and politically.
