Kolkata: Music, specially curated traditional Christmas dishes like turkey and duck roast, and special offers on food and drinks drew thousands to Park Street. Kolkata's party hub throbbed with revellers who swarmed the pavements since late afternoon on Christmas Eve. By evening, it turned into a sea of heads, even as restaurants and bars lining the road remained choc-a-bloc with visitors till midnight. The crowd was set to persist till at least 2 am, said restaurants.
Trincas turned the clock back with nostalgia-evoking jazz music on Wednesday afternoon. It was followed by retro Hindi music during the early evening, western music from 9 to 11 pm, before reverting to Hindi till closure at 1 am. "This time, the turnout was exceptionally high. So, we offered different kinds of music throughout the day to attract people with varying tastes at different hours. Footfall was higher than previous years," said Anand Puri of Trincas. Drums of heaven and makhmali cheese kebabs were high in demand, added Puri.
Next door, Kwality received ‘a lot of family crowd'. "Chhana bhatura has been going a lot, so are the kebabs – fish masala kebab and stuffed tangdi were also in demand. Fried prawns, too, were frequently ordered," said Tanvi Ghai of Kwality.
While most restaurants remained open till 2 am for food, liquor was served till 1 am. Mocambo and Peter Cat, along with Peter Hu, served liquor till 1 am and food till 2 am. "Chelo kebab, its variants, sizzlers, and Indian curries and gravies were in high demand across our outlets. Sushi did very well at Peter Hu," said Siddharth Kothari of the restaurant chain. He added that despite 150 additional seats at Peter Cat, all three restaurants remained fully occupied on Wednesday. "We had a big waiting crowd at all three," added Kothari.
Mocambo, Peter Cat, and Peter Hu will stay open late on Dec 20, 24, 26, and 27, but not on New Year's Eve. "Since Jan 1 is a working day, we expect a thinner crowd on Dec 31 night," added Kothari.
Down the road, Oasis stayed open till 2 am and had a full house from 6 pm. "On Wednesday, we had the office crowd as well as revellers and families. Turkey roast in apple sauce, lamb chops, duck roast, chicken ala kiev, and garlic chicken have so far been the favourites. This week, we will also serve dishes like turkey roast, lamb chops, and duck roast," said owner Pratap Daryanani. Oasis will stay open late on Dec 25, 27, and 31.
Bar-B-Q and Flavours of China, the perennial favourites of those hooked on Chinese food, saw a full house almost throughout the day.
