  • Kolkata: The Kolkata round of the IndianOil Science Quiz 3.0 was conducted at GD Birla Sabhagar auditorium on Tuesday, Dec 23, with 112 schools from Kolkata and its surroundings, including Siliguri, Bhubaneswar, Ranchi, Purulia and Kishanganj, as participants. The event, in its third year, was organised by Times of India.

After a preliminary written round, with very little separating the top eight teams, six made it to the finale where quizmaster Kunal Savarkar, nicknamed ‘the architect of questions', quizzed the participants on a host of topics, ranging from physics, chemistry and biology to geology, environment, safety, sustainability, technology and astronomy, all seen through the lens of scientific inquiry.

Commenting on both participation and performance, Savarkar said "Teams from across Kolkata demonstrated high levels of knowledge, while the high scoring reflects the increasing interest in science in India." Content curator and quizmaster Seema Chari said, "Students were up to the task of answering and solving the multi-format questions, demonstrating the talent in the next generation."

The final round was a multimedia extravaganza, with different rounds challenging awareness levels of the students as well as their ability to connect the dots. The quiz went down to the wire, with all teams in the fray till the last round. At the end of the final powered buzzer round, the team comprising Devayudh Das and Iraj Singh from Delhi Public School, Megacity, emerged winners. Jayabrata Ghosh and Ainak Chowdhury from Satish Chandra Memorial School came second, pushing Dipesh Das and Niyati Jois from Army Public School, Kolkata, into third place. The winners, runners-up and second runners-up teams received trophies, plaques, certificates of merit, and cash prizes.

The teacher mentors were also felicitated with a certificate of appreciation, and those from the three winning schools received cash prizes as well.

Prabir K Pal, chief general manager (information systems), IndianOil Corporation Limited, complimented the students on their performance, applauded their deep knowledge about science, and their enthusiasm. In his words, there were no losers at the quiz, only winners, as everyone present had gained knowledge by being a part of this celebration of scientific awareness.

IndianOil Science Quiz 3.0 has been conducted in eight cities — Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Guwahati, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai and New Delhi. The series will culminate in a grand national finale in Mumbai in Jan 2026.
