  • Kolkata: To meet the growing demand for electricity in Bengal, the state govt on Wednesday approved the second phase of the JSW Energy power project, which was announced during the Business and Industry Conclave last week. The project was approved at a state cabinet meeting chaired by chief minister Mamata Banerjee at Nabanna.

State finance minister Chandrima Bhattacharya stated that, considering the increasing demand for electricity, tenders were invited for the construction of the plant. The cabinet on Wednesday approved the proposal to build the power project with the JSW Group under a PPP (Public-Private Partnership) model. The tariff bid for the project was Rs 5.80 per unit.

JSW Energy joint MD and CEO Sharad Mahendra had announced during the conclave that the group would invest in another 1,600 MW supercritical power plant at Salboni, taking the total capacity to 3,200 MW. The group's total investment in the power sector in Bengal is set to rise to Rs 40,000 crore, with an incremental investment of Rs 24,000 crore (in addition to the earlier announced Rs 16,000 crore). "We received environmental clearance for the first phase (2x800 MW). It will employ 3,000 people," he said.
