  • Kolkata: The site for Durga Angan, the temple complex dedicated to Durga, has suddenly been changed, from a plot opposite Eco Park in New Town to a new piece of land opposite the New Town bus terminus in Action Area I. A govt official said the Monday schedule for the chief minister laying the foundation stone for the project stayed unchanged.

"The project site has been changed," Hidco chairperson and minister Chandrima Bhattacharya told TOI on Thursday, confirming the development. But she did not mention the reason behind the change.

Trinamool MLA of Rajarhat New Town Tapash Chatterjee pointed out Hidco had to consider several parameters before finalising the site for Durga Angan, supposed to be the biggest temple complex in the city. "Hidco officials found the new plot bigger in size than the earlier one and more technically suitable for developing Durga Angan. All aspects were considered so that no problem arises," he said. "Other projects will come up on the previous site."

TOI visited the previous site on Thursday to find the notice board, mentioning ‘Site for Durga Angan' removed. Work to prepare the ground was seen going on in full swing at the new site. A new notice board, mentioning ‘Durga Angan' was set up there.

After the CM had announced the plan for the temple complex, govt officials surveyed and zeroed in on the land opposite Eco Park. Ground preparation work had been on for the past few weeks before the sudden change in the location. To be built at an estimated cost of Rs 262 crore, Durga Angan will be developed by Hidco.
