  • Kolkata: Three days after the protest by several right-wing organisations against the murder of Dipu Das turned violent near the Bangladesh deputy high commission office, opposition leader of the state legislative assembly Suvendu Adhikari on Friday took out a protest rally with hundreds of sadhus to protest against atrocities occurring on Hindus in Bangladesh. This lead to traffic congestion on AJC Bose Road as the rally approached the diplomatic office. A sit-in started, blocking a long stretch of AJC Bose Road.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Sarani was barricaded on both ends to prevent protesters from entering, and vehicles were diverted.

"When will the torture on Hindus stop? Once Gangasagar Mela is over, I will bring thousands of sadhus here as a mark of protest," Adhikari said after submitting a memorandum to the Bangladesh deputy high commission.

Earlier in the day, activists of Hindu Samhati, a pro-Hindu outfit, took out a rally from Sealdah to a point near the Bangladesh deputy high commission. Following the agitation, a three-member delegation met a senior official of the diplomatic mission and submitted a six-point charter of demands. "We have demanded that Das's murderers and the cops who turned a blind eye towards the incident be punished. The Bangladesh govt should crack down on those who are spreading rumours against Hindus, and take proper steps," said Hindu Samhati president Santanu Singha.

Cops set up barricades near the diplomatic office to stop protesters from reaching it.
