KOLKATA: A 25-year-old Bangladeshi national was arrested on Friday after illegally crossing into India to meet his girlfriend in Basirhat. The arrested youth was identified as Rayhan Kabir, 25, of Sirajganj in Bangladesh. Police said he had entered India illegally through the Ghojadanga border in the Basirhat subdivision to meet a woman he had befriended on social media.
"Rayhan told police that he had crossed the international border in the early hours of Friday without valid documents to meet the woman in Basirhat. However, his plans went awry when he failed to locate her," said a senior police officer.
On Friday morning, Rayhan was seen roaming near a border village in Basirhat. His suspicious behaviour caught the attention of local residents, who informed the police.
A team from the Basirhat police station reached the spot and detained Rayhan for questioning. "He failed to produce any valid travel or identity documents. He was subsequently arrested on charges of illegal infiltration and produced before the Basirhat sub-divisional court, which remanded him in judicial custody for 14 days," the official added.
Police said they were investigating whether the incident was purely driven by a romantic relationship or if there was any other motive.
Investigators are also trying to ascertain with whom Rayhan had established contact in India and whether he had previously crossed the border illegally.
