Kolkata: A 30-year-old man, Biswajit Mondal, was allegedly beaten to death inside a de-addiction centre in Halisahar, North 24-Parganas, on Saturday, triggering widespread outrage among local residents.
According to locals, many were unaware that such a de-addiction centre was operating in the area. Residents demanded strict action against those responsible. Police have launched an investigation to ascertain the circumstances leading to the death. The owner of the centre has reportedly been absconding since the incident.
The de-addiction centre was allegedly operating out of a rented house in Ward No. 2 of Halisahar Municipality, near Check Post More. Mondal, a resident of Kalna, had been admitted there for treatment. His family and locals alleged that he was regularly assaulted in the name of "treatment". On Saturday, he was allegedly beaten again, leaving him critically injured.
