  • Kolkata: The law college, where a first-year student was raped, will issue a formal notice stating that no graffiti will be allowed on the college walls. The decision comes at a time when the college plans to paint the entire building to remove faded graffiti, including those with mention of ‘MM' — Monojit Mishra, the prime accused. The governing body decided in a meeting on Tuesday that the entire building will get a fresh coat of paint in the new year.

Vice principal Nayna Chatterji said, "There was a portion that remained to be whitewashed, which we completed recently and informed the GB at the meeting. This time we will paint the entire wall and we won't allow any poster, advertisement or writing on the wall. We will communicate this to the students once the college reopens after the winter break."

The college, during the puja vacation, removed a controversial graffiti on the wall opposite the main gate that read, "Monojit Dada is in our hearts (Team MM)." However, faded signs of some letters were still visible, prompting the college authority to go for a final round of whitewash to remove the marks.

After the incident, the college gave special focus to strengthening the security system on the premises. Following an internal survey, it was found that around 77 CCTVs needed to be installed. The college authority has requested funds from the state for it. Chatterji said that the matter was raised in the GB meeting, too, and it was decided that an e-tender will be floated for appointment of ex-Armymen for college security. The only armed guard in the college will retire on Jan 31.

"We had police posting at the college gate for security purposes till today. So, we need a security guard after the college reopens," Chatterji said.

An official of the higher education department stated that the file for the fund allocation for CCTV installation has been sent to the finance department for approval.

On the other hand, taking lessons from the incident, the college recently issued a notice to senior students, alerting them not to collect details from the first-year students or exchange phone numbers and pressure them to join social media groups. If they are found doing so, they will face disciplinary actions.
