  • Kolkata: The site opposite New Town bus terminus crossing in Action Area I is all decked up for the launch of ‘Durgangan', a temple complex dedicated to Goddess Durga. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to lay the foundation stone of the project on Monday.

TOI visited the spot on Sunday to look into the preparations. A German hanger tent with a platform was set up. Officials said that there would be seating arrangements for around 4,000 people for Monday's event. A large stage with a colourful background has been set up for the CM and other govt officials who will be present.

On Sunday, workers were seen levelling the ground around the tent with water sprinklers and earthmovers. A pathway was set up through which the CM will enter the dais. The New Town Kolkata Development Authority workers were decorating the footpath surrounding the ground with small plants and giving it a fresh coat of paint.

The land where the Durgangan will be developed measures 17.2 acres. The West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation is the nodal agency of the project. Senior officials were at the spot on Sunday to oversee preparation work.

"The ground was earlier vacant with bushes and weeds. The place is now already looking great," said Rajat Bose, a local. "Durgangan is a great idea as it solidifies Bengal's rich heritage and culture. We also know that the project, close to our home, will make the area look more vibrant. However, there is a concern that this will turn an already crowded junction into a more unmanageable place, unless the authorities do some planning regarding it. It would be great to see if the govt can also develop the open places for sports and recreation for residents of New Town," said Biswajit Majumder, a resident of Eastern High housing complex located opposite the project site.

The project was earlier supposed to come up on land opposite Eco Park, but there was a last-moment change. "The place is more prominent with adjacent residential areas, better connectivity, and a bigger ground size," said a govt official.
