  • Kolkata: The deployment of over 4,500 cops is likely to start from Dec 30 around the city's hotspots, including party zones. Cops are stepping up vigil against drink-driving and speeding to curb accidents on Tuesday (Dec 31) and Wednesday (Jan 1).

Post-Christmas, Park Street and Kasba—the party zones—as well as hotspots, including Alipore Zoo, Victoria Memorial Hall, Indian Museum, Millennium Park, Science City, and different clubs, are drawing huge crowds around this time.

Cops will set up check posts around hotspots to monitor security and focus on rogue motorists and bikers. Besides, special arrangements will be made on roads and in sensitive areas, witnessing high footfall of visitors at night, sources said. Special teams of cops in plainclothes will also be on patrol.

Along with Park Street, the party zones on EM Bypass connector, especially Kasba, will be under police watch as per plans. The watch section of the detective department, the all-women Winners team, and the quick response team (QRT) will be pressed into service, especially in Park Street. Cops will also make special channels for pedestrians safety and change signal timings to give adequate time for crossovers. Cops will put up barricades on roads near the hotspots. tnn
