Behrampore: Police on Sunday surrounded Bharatpur MLA Humayun Kabir's Shantipur residence in Murshidabad's Manikyahar and took his son Golam Nabi Azad, alias Robin, in for questioning, after a constable, Jumma Khan, one of Kabir's three personal security officer (PSOs), alleged Robin assaulted him when he sought leave. Following hours of questioning, Robin was arrested and later released on bail.
Kabir, who was not present at the residence at the time, denied Khan's allegation and said he had made several complaints about Khan to Behrampore police for his alleged unruly behaviour and requested for him to be replaced. He further alleged that law enforcement officials had levelled false allegations against his son.
According to Kabir, Khan barged into his office without permission while he was talking to his son. "He (Khan) breached (our) privacy and abruptly started arguing about a leave. He was about to attack me when my son stepped in," he said, adding, "There is CCTV footage to corroborate my account true while there is no proof of assault."
Additional SP Majid Iqbal Khan said that according to PSO Khan's complaint, the episode took place "in full public view", and cops have started going through CCTV footage. An FIR has been registered against both Kabir and his son.
Kabir has been in the spotlight ever since he was suspended from the Trinamool Congress. Following his suspension, the legislator went on to lay the foundation of a Babri Masjid-styled mosque and announced his own political outfit — Janata Unnayan Party (JUP).
While Kabir alleged the cops were questioning his son at the behest of Trinamool, the party's spokesperson Arup Chakraborty said, "As per information available with the party, Kabir's son pushed the constable when we went inside the house seeking leave for some personal work."
Despite Kabir's suspension, his son remains a Trinamool member and holds a post in the Beldanga-II panchayat samiti.
"He (Robin) committed a cognisable offence by raising his hand at a police officer and police have taken action as per law. The party has nothing to do with the incident," Chakraborty added.
BJP state president Samik Bhattacharya said, "Humayun is a Trinamool product and the party is trying to bring him into prominence." Congress working committee member Adhir Chowdhury said the exact series of events leading to the incident was a matter of inquiry.
