  • Bankura: Chaos broke out at a fair in Bankura's Bishnupur on Saturday night during actor Jeet's performance, as an unruly crowd spiralled out of control. The violence led to widespread vandalism, with hundreds of chairs smashed and nearby shops damaged.

Trouble erupted at the Jadu Bhatta stage around 8pm when Jeet and his co-artists began their scheduled performance. A massive turnout from across the district overwhelmed the arrangements at the venue.

Pushing and jostling soon turned violent as sections of the crowd broke barricades near the stage. Chairs including those reserved for senior citizens and women, were destroyed. Several nearby shops were vandalised, with allegations of cash being looted. Banners and flexes were torn down, including a large flex of CM Mamata Banerjee.

Police resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the crowd and several spectators were allegedly injured. A few people were detained but later released on personal bonds. Despite the chaos, the programme continued and Jeet and his team completed the performance and left the stage safely.

"The crowd was too big for the auditorium and it kept swelling as the event went on. At one point, when Jeet was performing on stage, there was a surge at the back to move ahead for a closer look. This led to a stampede-like situation and then the crowd went on a rampage, ransacking the auditorium," said Bapi Banerjee, one of the organisers of the event.
