Kolkata: A 22-year-old clay idol artisan, a trans woman from Behala, alleged mental and physical abuse by her elder brother and his girlfriend over the complainant's gender identity, and sought police protection as she planned to leave the family home.
The victim, in a complaint to Parnasree police, stated that she faced ‘regular mental, emotional abuse' from her brother and his girlfriend. Cops said, the complainant lived with her parents, grandparents and shared a room with her brother. The victim also alleged her brother damaged her sculptures and reportedly blamed her occupation for her gender identity.
The complainant stated that she was socially recognised as female since 2021, though she did not undergo sex reassignment surgery due to financial constraints. She alleged that her family initially did not object to her social transition, but the situation deteriorated after her brother's girlfriend began visiting their home frequently.
She claimed she was ‘assaulted' and ‘thrashed' by her brother, allegedly at the instigation of the girlfriend, in front of family members and neighbours. She said the incidents affected her physical and mental health and undermined her ability to live at home. The complainant further alleged she sustained injuries recently and a photocopy of a medical document was attached to the complaint.
She requested that police ensure her family members did not threaten or harass her after she left. "The complainant was treated and discharged from Vidyasagar State General Hospital. We are collecting evidence and recording statements," said DC (Southwest-Behala) Rahul De.
