Kolkata: The Bengal Police warned citizens not to spread false information regarding arrests of Bangladeshi nationals involved in causing unrest in the neighbouring country. Some social media forwards, believed to be generated across the border, claimed "Bengal STF was taking legal action against Bangladeshi anti-social elements."
"We noticed some posts on social media claiming the West Bengal Police had detained several citizens from a neighbouring country regarding a recent incident in that country. This information is unfounded. Please refrain from spreading rumours," the Bengal Police clarified on its social media page.
To curb these rumours, the social media monitoring cells took strict measures from the beginning. As the investigation progressed, Lalbazar detected ‘foreign involvement' in spreading these rumours after it emerged that most fake news were forwarded or retweeted.
