Howrah: Howrah City Police's Domjur police arrested a chartered accountant, Souvik Pakui, on Sunday night for allegedly defrauding people of over Rs 80 lakh by promising jobs through his connections with high-ranking officials in various Central govt departments. Police arrested him while he was returning home in a blue beacon car.
A non-bailable case was filed against him, and he was presented in Howrah court on Monday.
A Howrah City Police officer said that the arrested CA is a resident of Domjur and owns a firm in Andul. He used to travel in cars with red or blue beacons, earning respect from locals because his car displayed a stamp of the Central govt's finance department. However, it was later revealed that the stamp was fake, and his promises were false.
He misled people for days by taking money under various pretexts. On Sunday, some local residents of Domjur stopped him and began to assault him, vandalising his car with the blue beacon. Police rescued him and took him to the station based on complaints from the victims. After continuous questioning, he was arrested on Sunday night.
Souvik was known as a brilliant student in Domjur's Parui area. Neighbours believed he held a high position in the Central govt and was associated with wealthy and influential people.
