Kolkata: A 38-year-old woman was allegedly attacked with a knife in an attempt to murder her after she tried to stop her boyfriend from dying by suicide inside a hotel room in Sealdah on Sunday. Her boyfriend who she befriended just four months ago resides in Tamil Nadu.
The incident was reported from a guest house in Koley Market area under Muchipara Police Station in central Kolkata. The woman, Baishakhi Das, is hospitalised with multiple injuries to her neck. Her "boyfriend", Pradeep Kumar Selvaraj from Chennai, was arrested by the police and charged with attempted murder.
"Around 4.15 pm on Sunday, information was received from Bishwarup Pal regarding an assault at ‘PP's Nest' Guest House, located at 159, BB Ganguly Street. A boarder staying in Room No. 412 assaulted his girlfriend with a knife, causing profuse bleeding from her neck and shoulder. The victim, Baisakhi, a resident of Malidaha in North 24 Parganas, was immediately shifted to NRS Hospital by the guest house staff," said a senior central district officer.
Duty officers from Muchipara PS reached the spot, cordoned off the place of occurrence, and detained Selvaraj. The duty officer also recorded the statement of the victim at NRS Hospital while she was undergoing treatment.
During a search, incriminating articles were seized under videography, including a sharp-edged knife (the weapon of offence), bloodstains from the floor and bedsheet, and the guest house register, along with identification documents of both the victim and the other boarder.
The accused, Selvaraj, residing in JV Nagar near Madipakkam in Chennai, was interrogated. It was learnt that Selvaraj met Baishakhi about four months ago during a visit to Kolkata and remained in contact with her through WhatsApp and phone calls.
He returned to Kolkata about 18 days ago, and both of them went to Digha, where they stayed for 15 days. They returned to Kolkata and checked into PP's Nest on Dec 26.
"The accused claimed that a quarrel ensued when he attempted to consume rat poison in an alleged suicide attempt. When the victim intervened to stop him, he became enraged and stabbed her on the shoulder with a knife, which he claimed to have purchased from Sealdah Market with the intention of injuring himself. We need to ascertain his claims. Prima facie, his statements somewhat match what the victim told us," said an investigating officer.
The probe further revealed that the accused was unemployed for the past four years and was financially supported by his brother in Chennai. His passport indicates that he travelled to Dubai in 2023 in search of employment, as his sister resides there. The victim is still under treatment in the hospital, said cops.
According to police and local sources, Baishakhi and Selvaraj had rented a room in the guest house using fake documents.
