Police to double deployment across city on New Year’s Eve
Times of India | 31 December 2025
Kolkata: Twice the number of cops will be deployed across the city on New Year's Eve compared to Christmas Day. Around 6,500 cops will be posted in two batches — around 9 am and then around 4 pm, when the main deployment will take place.
Around 4,000 cops will be on the roads for Dec 31 between Park Street and Alipore zoo–Alipore Jail Museum, 2,500 of them on Park Street alone. Another 1,300 cops in uniform will be deployed across other hotspots and special nakas. Special teams from the detective department, the KP STF, and the Special Branch will be present across the city.
Just like Christmas, drones will be used in the Park Street and Alipore zoo areas. By evening, teams from the watch section of the detective department, the all-women Winners Team, and QRTs will be out around Park Street to stop illegal activities.
Central Kolkata will be manned by 18 IPS officers, with the main area divided into multiple zones and multiple watchtowers. Cops will also set up assistance booths.
"The crowd will be larger than Christmas. Rowdiness on this day is usually higher so our response has to be adequate," said a DCP.
Lalbazar on Tuesday said special teams, with personnel in plain clothes, were formed "based on security intelligence inputs". There will be police teams focusing on the safety of women, the elderly, and children.
Lalbazar on Monday asked all police stations to form teams to ensure crackers are not burst beyond the stipulated period allowed by the courts.
A special crackdown was also ordered against the use of DJs above permissible limits at local events.
A huge challenge will be to counter drink driving, said cops who are likely to continue with special raids every day now. Cops have decided not to allow anyone to roam around and block the eatery entrances.
