  • Kolkata: Hotel Sonar Bangla Group has taken over Peerless Hotels' Mukutmanipur property. The group is drawing up plans to acquire more hotels in the state.

Chairman of Hotel Sonar Bangla, Avishek Paul Chowdhury, told TOI that it took over the Mukutmanipur property on Dec 5. The Mukutmanipur property is on 4 acres of land and has 25 rooms. The 30-year-old property overlooks a lake. Paul Chowdhury pointed out that it would renovate the property from April. The group now has 12 properties, including recently opened properties in Susunia and Ayodhya Hills. It will soon have a property in Bolpur.

"Our focus is now rural tourism. There are a lot of places in Bengal which can be promoted. There is a lot to see in such places, but you can't stay a day or two in most spots," Paul Chowdhary added. According to him, the group is also planning to set up hotels in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Diamond Harbour, Bakkhali and Kalimpong. "We already have some land in Andaman," he added.

When contacted, Peerless Group's director, business development and transformation, Supriyo Sinha, pointed out that the group had decided to focus more on business hotels, and was coming out of leisure hotels. The Peerless Group now has 4 hotels in Kolkata, Durgapur, Hyderabad and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Hotel Sonar Bangla Group started its journey in 2002 with Tarapith, and its 2nd hotel was in Darjeeling, followed by Puri, Mandarmani and then Kolaghat. "The one at Kolaghat is our largest hotel with 125 rooms, followed by the Taki property with 105 rooms," Paul Chowdhury said.
