  • Kolkata: The Office of the Bengal chief electoral officer until Wednesday evening received a list of high-rises, where polling stations could be set up, from five out of eight districts marked in the state. The EC had set Dec 31 as the deadline to submit the list.

"We received a list from five districts of high-rises with both 300-plus and at least 500 voters. Three districts are yet to send the lists. The list has only the numbers and names. We will send it to the EC," an official said. The EC will finalise the list and will give proposals through DEOs.

Senior deputy election commissioner Gyanesh Bharti told DEOs of Kolkata North and South, North and South 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly and East and West Burdwan on Tuesday that the EC was now considering setting up polling stations even in housing complexes or societies with 300 voters and sought such lists.

The EC had earlier directed DEOs to survey high-rises, group housing societies, RWA (resident welfare association) colonies, slums and gated societies with at least 250 houses or 500 voters, with details of available rooms on ground floors, and to identify suitable accommodation for polling stations on the premises and send a list to the EC.
