  • Kolkata: A 28-year-old youth from Sodepur, who was injured in an assault following an assault during a music concert of Bollywood composer-singer Ankit Tiwari at Panihati Festival, died of his injuries at a hospital four days later on Thursday night.

Police arrested four persons—Deep Adhikari, Debajit Das, Shivam Das and Akash Naskar— on Friday in connection with the alleged murder. They were remanded in police custody by Barrackpore court on Friday. Sources said Sarkar went to the programme at Sodepur Amrabati ground on Sunday with friends. Police said a scuffle broke out between two groups at the crowded venue.

They said the situation escalated after Sarkar left the fairground. "He was reportedly dragged into a nearby alley and beaten by a group of youths with whom he had earlier clashed," a senior police officer of the Barrackpore Commissionerate said.

Sarkar later fell critically ill and was first taken to Panihati State General Hospital, then shifted to College of Medicine and Sagor Dutta Hospital in Kamarhati. He was transferred to the trauma care unit of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where he died.

Khardah Police registered a case of murder. Police said the accused confessed that the attack was carried out on the instructions of Adhikari. Opposition parties demanded accountability as the festival is organised under the supervision of Panihati TMC MLA Nirmal Ghosh. Ghosh said no untoward incident was reported inside the venue.
