  • Digha's Jagannath temple is all set to celebrate the ‘pushpa abhishek' (floral bathing ceremony) of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra on Saturday. Unlike the traditional ‘snana yatra' of June — where the deities are bathed in the ‘pancha tattva' (milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar) — this ceremony focuses on floral offerings.

"The deities will be decorated with fresh flowers from early morning," said Radharaman Das, the head priest of the temple, adding, "The unique attraction is the floral shower. The flowers offered by devotees throughout the day will be collected and released over the deities through a specially designed fountain system, creating a rain of petals." The popularity of the Digha Jagannath temple has skyrocketed since its opening. According to temple authorities, over 1 lakh devotees visited the shrine on Jan 1 alone. Plans are afoot to build a massive dining hall, similar to the one at Iskcon temple in Mayapur.
