A Sub-Inspector in Baruipur in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district was arrested on Thursday in connection with the death of a woman home guard.
The 22-year-old home guard’s body was found hanging in the police quarters of Canning Police Station on Sunday evening. The police had launched a search for the accused cop, identified as Sayan Bhattacharya, who had gone missing since the incident.
According to police sources, Bhattacharya was tracked down and arrested from the Swarupnagar Police Station area in Basirhat in North 24 Parganas. He was subsequently produced before the Alipore Court.
On Sunday evening, the body of the home guard was found at her official residence by her sister who reached there after failing to reach her on the phone. The body was found hanging in her room. The family has claimed that she did not die by suicide and filed a complaint against Bhattacharya, alleging he had an extra marital relationship with her.
Police have formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the case. The six-member SIT is being headed by Additional Superintendent of Police of Baruipur Parapantar Sengupta.
The deceased’s father was a TMC (Trinamool Congress) worker who was murdered in Bhangar two years ago during the panchayat elections. Following that, his eldest daughter was given a job as a home guard.
