  • Kolkata: A Rs 9.7-crore national project to study the toxicological and safety evaluation of traditional medicine systems—Ayurvedic herbs and formulations—has led to the development of the Centre for Evaluation of Traditional Medicine (TradMed-CoE) at Jadavpur University, aimed at promoting Indian knowledge systems (IKS).

The project was sanctioned by the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS) under the ministry of Ayush.

The centre was inaugurated on Saturday, attended by CCRAS director-general Rabinarayan Acharya and adviser to the ministry of Ayush Kousthubha Upadhyaya, along with JU VC Chiranjib Bhattacharjee and others.

"JU established the interdisciplinary centre for evaluation of traditional medicine systems. This project and TradMed-CoE mark a landmark development, aimed at strengthening the scientific credibility and global acceptance of India's traditional medicine systems," the VC said.

Pulak Mukherjee, centre and project head, said, "We will start with 10 formulations. It boosts JU's work on research with societal relevance." —Dipawali Mitra
