Kolkata: A three-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted on Saturday evening near the rail bridge at Chaul Patty in Beleghata, police said. The child, who lives with her family in a settlement close to the railway tracks, was admitted to CNMC Hospital for treatment. A man, known to the girl's family, has been arrested in connection to the case.
The accused allegedly took the girl, while she was playing, to a poorly-lit spot near the tracks under the pretext of showing affection and buying her goodies, locals and police said. Soon, the child started crying, drawing attention of locals. When the locals arrived, they questioned the man about the child's distress, but he didn't respond and locals left. But then her cries grew louder and when locals returned again, the man fled leaving her near the tracks, police said.
After sometime when the girl's family members reached the spot, they found her bleeding. They rushed her to the hospital. The family approached Beleghata police station to lodge a complaint. Police traced the accused and detained him. Later, the police handed over the accused to Sealdah Govt Railway Police (GRP) as the matter fell under its jurisdiction.
GRP arrested the accused, registered a case under Pocso Act and produced him before Sealdah court, which sent him to judicial custody.
