Kolkata: A group of six miscreants, who were on two motorbikes, opened fire several rounds inside the Bhatpara Rail Quarters complex on Sunday afternoon. Police are looking for the accused but no one has been arrested yet.
Several police from Barrackpore Commissionerate, led by Indra Badon Jha, DCP, Central reached the spot after being alerted by the locals. They recovered two empty cartridges from the area. "No injuries have been reported so far", said a cop.
"The identity of those who opened fire remains unclear. We are probing whether the incident was linked to a turf war over an alleged gang rivalry or if there was some other motive behind it," a senior police officer of the Barrackpore Commissionerate said.
Local councillor Mili Dutta also visited the spot. "I will speak to the administration and party workers. However, I can say that this is not a political issue. It could be the act of some antisocial elements stemming from a personal dispute. I do not have any further information at this moment," she said.
