  • Kolkata: Five persons, including an elderly woman and a couple, were assaulted in two separate road rage incidents in north Kolkata's Sinthee and Nimtala areas over the past two days, prompting police to appeal on Facebook for calm and restraint amid the winter season.

In the first incident, a resident of Dum Dum Road submitted a written complaint alleging that he, Sourav Basak, and his mother, Rita Basak (65), were attacked on Jan 3 around 2 pm near Sinthee Chors Club. Basak was driving out of a narrow street when a white car entered from the opposite side. With the lane blocked, both vehicles attempted to adjust position to pass. Basak alleged he folded the other car's rear-view mirror to avoid contact, which the occupants took as provocation.

The complaint named Arijit Adhikary and his wife, Sangita, residents of the same area, as the assailants. Basak alleged Adhikary grabbed his hand and yanked it, twisting a finger, causing a severe sprain, and punched him. Arijit claimed in a counter-complaint that Basak attacked him and his wife and pushed them, causing her to fall and sustain injuries.

Basak said that both he and his mother sought medical attention at RG Kar Hospital, and that he submitted medical reports and supporting documents with the complaint.

In the second incident, Shyambazar Police registered a case based on a complaint by a resident of Nimtala Lane. The victim (48) alleged that on Jan 4 around 12.30 pm, Pappu Roy wrongfully restrained, pushed and threatened her , used filthy language, and outraged her modesty. The dispute arose over parking of her car on the road in front of the accused's house at Nimtala Lane.

Kolkata Police used its official social media handle to urge commuters to avoid confrontations and remain composed, warning that minor disputes on the road can quickly escalate into violence.
