• Dead voter walk on ramp: BLO responsible, EROs tell EC
    Times of India | 6 January 2026
  • Kolkata: In a report to the EC, electoral registration officers (EROs) have admitted that of the three ‘dead' voters presented by TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Friday, two had been marked "dead" by BLOs "unintentionally", but one was a "genuine mistake". The BLO for the third case is likely to be penalised.

Banerjee had paraded three voters — Monirul Islam Molla and Harikrishna Giri from Metiabruz, and Maya Das from Kakdwip — during a rally in Baruipur, referring to the trio as "ghosts who were walking".

According to an EC official, marking Maya Das's name as ‘dead' is considered to be an error on the part of the BLO, while those related to Molla and Giri were not intentional. Names of Molla and Giri were not on the initial list of excluded voters. Later, their names appeared on the website. After the incident came to light, the BLO visited the homes of Molla and Giri and provided them with Form-6 so they could apply afresh. The official said Form-6 for these 2 voters was processed well ahead of the Friday rally.

Meanwhile, EC has also sought a report from the DEOs of South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore regarding the compliance report of filing FIR against EROs and AEROs of Baruipur East and Moyna.
