Kolkata: Suspended Trinamool MLA Humayun Kabir was forced to beat a retreat from the Brigade Parade Ground on Monday afternoon after facing protests while inspecting the venue for a Janata Unnayan Party (JUP) rally.
The protesters, who identified themselves as Trinamool workers from Garden Reach, raised slogans such as "Go back" and "BJP agent, go away". They surrounded his vehicle and continued shouting as he prepared to leave.
One protester alleged Kabir was "trying to ruin Bengal's environment by working for BJP". Before leaving the venue, Kabir said, "Anyone can protest." He added that JUP plans to hold a rally at the Brigade on Jan 31 or in early Feb and that he would meet the army official in charge of the ground to ensure compliance with the rules.
