  • Kolkata: Fog and speeding led to eight accidents, five of them fatal, between midnight and 7 am over the past 10 days.

The accidents were reported from Thakurpukur, Haridevpur, Alipore, West Port, Beleghata and Bowbazar. "The weather, which remained foggy, and speeding were major contributors. In one case, overtaking from the wrong side was the reason," said a Lalbazar officer.

"It all started with the death of ASI Sahabuddin Biswas, who died after a truck hit his bike on Basanti Highway, with the driver claiming he could see nothing beyond 50 ft amid fog that night. The year started with fatal truck accidents in New Alipore and Bowbazar on Jan 1 and 2, when truck drivers involved claimed they failed to spot the victims," said an officer. "Even tech was challenged amid fog as cops claimed due to haze, a vehicle that hit a biker, Akib Muhamad (21), on Bypass, could not be identified."

Cops blamed the deaths of bikers Sandip Das at Behala and Dharmendra Sharma at Ultadanga on speeding.
