Siliguri: Five people, including two women and a minor, were injured after a security guard's duty firearm allegedly went off accidentally inside a public sector bank at Bidhan Nagar in the Phansidewa block on the outskirts of Siliguri on Tuesday. Cops detained the security guard, Manik Roy, for questioning and seized the firearm. Darjeeling SP Praween Prakash said CCTV footage from the bank was being examined to establish the exact sequence of events.
The injured were identified as Mary Nag (37), Sonali Nag (14), Mohammad Nurul Haque (35), Sanjita Pahan (41), and Biplab Singh (30).
According to witnesses, the incident occurred around 11.30 am during peak banking hours. Sources said the guard reportedly placed his double-barrelled shotgun on the floor and it slipped and discharged accidentally, firing pellets that struck several customers standing nearby.
