• For SIR, EC using apps made by BJP IT cell: Mamata

  • Gangasagar (South 24 Parganas): Chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday alleged that the Election Commission was using mobile applications developed by BJP's IT cell to conduct the SIR exercise in Bengal.

Banerjee was speaking to reporters following her 2-day visit to Sagar Island where she laid the foundation stone for the Gangasagar Setu and took stock of preparations for Gangasagar Mela, which is set to start on Thursday.

"The EC is making wrong moves. The living are being shown ‘dead'. The elderly — ill and indisposed — are being called for hearings. The apps that are developed by BJP's IT cell are unethical, unconstitutional and undemocratic. This cannot go on," the CM said. Reacting to Trinamool MP Derek O'Brien moving a plea to the Supreme Court against SIR on Tuesday, the CM said the election panel had taken recourse to arbitrary and procedurally irregular actions for conducting SIR.

On Monday during her Gangasagar visit, the CM said that she would move the Supreme Court against SIR and, if required, would plead herself.
