  • Midnapore: A retired Armyman, who could not get his name enrolled on the 2002 SIR list because of his duty in Kargil, turned up for a hearing with all documents in Midnapore on Wednesday. Anupam Singh, now 48, received the Operation Vijay Medal for his participation in the Kargil War fought between India and Pakistan in 1999. He retired from the Army in 2017 and returned to Midnapore.

A resident of the Habibpur area under ward 8, Singh is listed at serial number 994 in booth 163 of 236 Midnapur Assembly constituency at Saraswati Vidyamandir. His ancestral home is in Kenchakapur village under Chandrakona 2 Block. Singh was born in 1978, and when he was a child, his father passed away about 42 years ago. His mother's name was not on the 2002 list.

Armed with documents, including proof of his military service, photocopies of his PPO and school certificate, the Kargil hero turned up at the SHG building in the DM's compound.

"In 2002, I was stationed in the Batalik sector in Kargil. During the SIR exercise 23 years ago, I was serving the nation as an Armyman, and that is why I could not register my name on the voter list. After my retirement from the Army, I returned to Midnapore and got my name registered on the voter list," said Singh. At present, he is serving as the confidential assistant (CA) to the additional district magistrate (Panchayat).

Singh was part of the Army Service Corps, with his first posting in Nasirabad, Rajasthan, after training in Bangalore starting Jan 1, 1996, in Kolkata. In 1999, he was posted in the Batalik sector in Srinagar, and in March 1999, he moved to Srinagar. The Kargil War lasted from April to Aug. He then returned to Srinagar and was in Meerut in 2002. He retired as a ‘naik' on Dec 31, 2017.
