• For 94.5L ‘logical discrepancy’ voters, time in the queue starts next week

  • Kolkata: Around 94.5 lakh electors with ‘logical discrepancies' will start getting hearing notices from the Election Commission from Thursday. While the hearing of unmapped voters is underway, the EC on Wednesday released on the BLO App the list of voters who will be summoned to clarify their ‘logical discrepancies', including progeny mapping.

So far, the EC did not announce specific dates for the hearing of these voters with ‘logical discrepancies'. Officials said it was likely to start from the coming week, presumably on Jan 12 or 13. "From Thursday onwards, the BLOs will receive the hard copies of the hearing notices, which they will have to deliver to their houses. The list of these electors was shared with the BLOs on their app. Those who have more such electors will get the notices in phases," said an EC official.

The move came a day after the EC gave relief to over 41.5 lakh voters with minor discrepancies in electoral rolls. When the SIR draft list was published, the enumeration of about 1.3 crore voters was found in the ‘logical discrepancies' category. With the EC's waiver, the number of these voters came down to 94.5 lakh.

A BLO in Maniktala, who has about 150 voters' SIR enumeration with ‘logical discrepancies', stated: "Initially, we were told that the electors with ‘logical discrepancies' will be called following the hearing of unmapped voters. However, my ERO informed me that a hard copy of the notice will be sent from Thursday itself. The names of the electors who have ‘logical discrepancies' were updated on the BLO App."

The mismatches relating to date of birth, different spellings of names, omission of middle names, gender discrepancies, and age differences with parents or grandparents are considered cases of logical flaws. During the hearing, electors will have to furnish their documents in order to sort out their logical flaws.

Another BLO from the Tollygunge area said: "As per the EC's instruction, the minor discrepancies will be sorted out without a hearing, as some of these errors happened while uploading enumeration data on the app in a hurry. I have around 100 voters with major discrepancies, and they will be called for the hearing."

Meanwhile, several BLOs stated they already served hearing notices to electors aged above 85 years before the EC's Dec 29 circular directing hearings at the houses of these electors. "As soon as I received the hearing notices, I started giving them out to voters at their houses. Now I am visiting the houses of elderly voters again and informing them that the commission will send officials to their houses for hearing and that they will not have to turn up at the venue mentioned in the notice," said a BLO from Garfa.
