In a road accident that sent shockwaves along national highway 12, two passenger buses collided head-on today around 4.15 p.m. near the Bahadurpur forest area under Dhubulia police station limits, claiming three lives and leaving six others injured.
The buses, one bound for Kolkata and the other heading towards Baharampur, crashed after the latter reportedly strayed into the wrong lane. The vehicles involved bore registration numbers WB-51A/1112 and WB-51/9222.
Police sources indicate that a deadly combination of over-speeding, reckless driving, and ongoing highway construction led to the fatal collision.
Among the dead are 25-year-old Rozina Khatun, six-year-old Rashid Sheikh, and an unidentified man, approximately 50 years old. Six passengers sustained injuries of varying severity and were rushed to nearby hospitals.
Both buses have been seized and are under investigation at the Dhublia police station. The highway was cleared shortly after the accident, restoring traffic flow. Authorities confirmed that law and order have been fully maintained.
The tragic incident underscores the persistent dangers on NH-12, where speeding and lane violations amid construction zones continue to endanger commuters.
